Hi admins! Question / suggestion for you.
I'm brand new here, as you know & am just finding my way around the site.
So far liking it a lot. The forum engine is certainly a big improvement on the old PHPBB boards & feels much more stable... and you guys look to be doing a great job of organising things neatly.

Wondered if there's a section somewhere for us to post our individual build diaries, like a running bio for our trucks instead of posting them as discussion threads?
I see there's a dedicated sub for blogs & websites, which is a really good idea. Just thinking it'd be great to have somewhere in-house to post our progress in a way that's not open to discussion, so that people can see a photo / avatar of a truck they like, click on it & see the story of what went into building it in the order it happened but without having to wade through lots of replies from other members to get to the next bit - a timeline kind of thing.
People would of course want to leave comments & ask questions, so perhaps a separate comments section for each bio page? Commenters might then reference a post number or something when they want to discuss a particular aspect of the build.

Not sure if this is something within the scope of the software to do or even something you'd want for the site but I think it could be a valuable resource. Also a good way to give owner-members a sense of belonging and help everyone keep track of whos truck is whos (so many trucks around these days, I can't be the only one who has a job remembering a truck to a name to a screen-name!)
There was the beginnings of a similar thing on The Overlander forum - a bio page for each truck. It only had scope for answering a few basic questions and giving a description of the project with a few photos but most of the owner-members there did use it to good effect. It was useful to newcomers too, as they'd see something they liked and immediately know who to contact to ask about it.

Thanks for putting this site together in any case. I can see that it'll be popular once word gets around.

It is called having your own website Stu! I think this is a bit difficult for those that already have a website as, in theory, some of our trucks are already built....
Some sort of index page, or truck build directory page, or I suppose an build links page, so those that have their own site can just place a picture and a link .
Not sure if any of the above makes sense, but I am sure you can work it out!

Ah yes, I see the status field for profiles now. Good shout Thomas!
If the same editing tools were made available for posting status's as we have for posting thread comments, that could be the perfect way to timeline a build-in-progress
Where does that status appear when you post it? Could there be a way to link a forum thread to profile status's somehow, so a thread dedicated to one truck would update any time the owner posted a new status?

Bri... Yes, makes fine sense.
Yeah, I guess having your own website is another way to do it. I did have one back along (think you probably saw it) but as you know, keeping it up to date, secure & maintained is a large & never-ending job. Mine was hacked like yours were. Took me months to convince the host that it was in fact my site; and when they finally came round, I quickly deleted it to prevent the same happening again.
I'm thinking my idea could tie in with the sub forum for website links - those with existing websites would need only to post a thread with a photo of their truck and a link to their site, where they're free to talk about whatever truck-related stuff they like, as is being done already - but those without websites would have the option to dedicate a page to their truck.
It wouldn't even necessarily have to be all about the build process. As you say, many trucks are already finished. For those it could work more like a mini blog for sharing their travels or whatever interesting things are going on for them at that time.

Obviously drive space is a factor, so perhaps there might be a limit on posts per (day / week / whatever) or characters / photos per post, that kind of thing... and as we've both seen, a bit of merchandising with T-shirts / stickers / mugs, etc could help pay for hosting & admin time and the members who value the site will most likely be happy to support it.

Thanks Stu, all suggestions to improve the experience and the site are welcome. Some suggestions are easy to accommodate, others require a bit more thought and development. This is in the second category. Leave it with me for now.

Tom, there is no add-on for that feature at present, there was some discussion in December last on the XF boards about getting someone to develop it. Leave that with me too!

Rather than a build diary how about putting each stage in the relevant section, like the way Chris has put his box build progress in the habitation box section?
Just a thought
Ivan

Sure thing Lazz. I figured that much functionality would be a bit of a stretch from the normal forum mechanics but never hurts to throw ideas around eh!

Bri... yeah, whoever hacked it started sending out phishing emails claiming to be from me. I had to get Google to shut down my email and forward the scam mails directly to Weebly before they'd believe that the site had been hacked. Lost some useful business contacts through that nonsense, as they thought it was me pulling a con on them from an alt website. Thankfully I didn't have to do any coding on the site, as Weebly provides an online editor. Still was a lot of time & effort pulling everything together and you're right... disheartening is the word for it. After that and an unrelated episode involving my business site, I can't bring myself to want another site again.

Ivan... I see what you're saying and you have a point but that's just foruming. I was looking for a way to show progress / the build / travels whatever in a non-forum-y way so that others wouldn't have to wade through pages of discussion & comments to see things unfolding. You know how forums go... one post can get 3 pages of replies that end up turning into a discussion about something else. Also like Brian says, it'd be good to have all the trucks indexed in one place somehow.
The map on the facebook group is kind of good for that - it just doesn't say anything about the trucks or the owners or the ideas behind them.

The map in question was created originally by Samp64, and now is under the control of Sam and myself, after the original got destroyed! It is great to be able to drive around the country, and a few countries abroad, and see who is nearby... so you can go visit, or ignore them as the case may be!
I would like to see the same thing on here one day....

I suggested exactly this functionality at the pre-live development phase and would still, definitely encourage its inclusion.

My suggestion was for a pro-forma style presentation of individual owner's trucks covering things like base vehicle, habitation box construction, heating systems, electrical systems, etc, etc (either existing or intended, for builds in progress). The case studies in the book give an idea of the kind of thing I'd personally commend. It's a good way to keep control and keep content relevant, consistent and - if desired - within a word-count limit.

It would make a really good focus point for all members' trucks and provide be really easy way for readers to dip in and out to gain inspiration / ideas.

Any questions / comments arising could then be posted on the open forum in the appropriate existing section where the owner could respond and the thread contributed to by all members, and take it's natural course.

Not sure if the original suggestion was lost in the noise, technically awkward or just not deemed useful.

Bri... Could you not just post a link to the map & have it made a pinned thread? Would be nice to see it given its own header tab later but for now, any access to it from here would be better than none.

Steve... Great to read from you! I tried to add you on FB but no "request" button for your profile so couldn't. Hope you're keeping well these days. Feel free to drop me an email sometime if you fancy a catch-up. My address is in my sig.
Good to hear that the idea isn't lost on people anyhow. Yes, that's exactly what I had in mind, with the forum taking the overflow of comments so that people could read about / see photos of an idea on a "truck bio page", then take them to the forum & discuss with everyone to find out how others are doing it.
Can't imagine your original suggestion would've been deemed not useful though - It's the sort of thing I can picture most people wanting to use. More likely as Lazz said above that it would be quite a lot of time & work to implement. Something for later perhaps, as the site grows & finds ways to support itself. I hope so anyway.

Wow you lot seem to know lots about build pages and sites and what nots, I'm just getting the grips with just start the dam thing, no idea what I'm doing and how it works, I think is going to be a long road, I'm hoping to have it build by the end of the year as next year is D day so if any one has any any spare time and want to meet me and start it off would be just fab, thank you

No Stu, sorry I should have said it was started for the DAF T244 owners and wannabe owners, my fault, I should have mentioned that...
No reason why we could not have a map page for this group, but only if it is wanted! I love the T244 map so I know where to avoid!

Ah, I see.
Well for what it's worth, you'd have my vote for a map page on here too. I'd be happy to put myself on it.
Perhaps there could be a way to have one map for all the different makes & models of truck but with filters, so you can search it for say, only T244's or only Mogs or MAN's or what-have-you. Would save the need for multiple implementations of the same feature. You're the map bloke though - I wouldn't have the foggiest if that was do-able or how.

Hi Gazelle! So you're building your own site then? If you're new to it & just want a basic site, I'd recommend using someone like Weebly, VistaPrint or Wix (there are a lot of companies like them but I've used these 3 myself and found them to be pretty good) . You can create websites with them for free and they have nice easy online visual editors with handfulls of stock templates to start you off. Very easy & quick to produce good looking results / get published and no coding needed. For some of the more advanced functions, you can buy premium packages with them but for the most part there's no need. They can also provide custom domain names for a small one-off fee if you want one. Feel free to drop me a PM or email if you want some tips.

Steve, none of the above. I am working on the gallery section which will allow much greater control of media and also allow builds to be showcased, and creation of individual searchable albums etc.
Excellent news, L - such a showcase would be, I think, be an excellent resource and set the site apart.

Cheers Stu, you taught me much about staying under the radar...

Wow, thanks Lazz! Off to check that out now!

Steve... Yeah, I suppose I did fall off the planet there for a bit, eh! Had to be done but glad to hear someone was paying attention in my classes! Hehe!

Going on from this, I initially posted my Build Thread in the Unimog and MB section as I naturally assumed that's where it had to be (as is the way on another well frequented platform by me)... I then realised that I had posted in the tech question section here that's relevant to each truck, as I didn't look properly.... Doh! A quick message to Lazz had that corrected and had my thread moved to the Builds section. I still thought this was an odd place at first as it is a Mercedes truck build... and I still kinda wanted it in the MB and Mog section as that's what it is.... BUT, the more I've thought about it, the more I think having a separate place for all builds is a good thing. I now think this because on the 'other' platform each build thread is in the section relevant to that make of truck.... therefore I rarely leave the Unimog and MB section and read threads on other makes of platform. Each brand becomes a little 'group' of its own, and I just chat with people building on Merc's like myself... Whereas OverlandingTrucks has already had me looking at MAN, Tatra and DAF builds, and talking with a whole array of people! Great work Lazz, you've already sucessfully changed a creature of habit! Keep up the great work! :)
